How different is a Dentist from an Orthodontist?

Most of us become confused when it comes to the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist. You may have experienced getting recommendations from your dentist for you to go to an orthodontic clinic. And this may have confused you as to why you need to go to an orthodontist.

So what is the difference between your dentist and an orthodontist?

A dentist is more concerned with the health of the gums and teeth of his patients. His or her primary task is to clean the teeth and to preserve the healthiness of the teeth. A dentist can also provide solutions to teeth and gum problems like cracking and chipping.

An orthodontist, on the other hand, is more focused on the proper alignment of the teeth. He or she can provide different solutions to a problem called malocclusions, which is known as the condition where the teeth are misaligned.

An orthodontist can provide treatments such as invisalign, braces and etc. He or she may also perform surgical orthodontic procedures in cases where the teeth misalignment problem is causing discomfort to the patient like chewing problem.

Orthodontic procedures are also more expensive than dental treatments. Depending on the severity of the teeth’s misalignment, an orthodontic treatment many cost from 1, 500 to 10 thousand dollars.
